Complex footwork with a pronounced movement of the hips

Okay, read this definition and see what you think.

  1. A dance of Cuban origin, combining complex footwork with a pronounced movement of the hips.
Last night, I had the distinct pleasure of dancing rhumba at BYU's International Dance Lab (it's kind of a mock-competition thing) and it was AWESOME!

For starters, let me just say that I've never taken a dance class before coming to BYU. My dad now accuses me of being a Song-and-Dance major, which is more true than I'd like to admit, since I'm in Men's Chorus and taking two dance classes. Oh well. But I digress. Last night, I danced in the rhumba competition my partner and I got 5th place out of 120 couples! AGHHHH! At the beginning of the competiton, I said to my partner "okay, if we get past the first round, I'll be satisfied." As near as I can remember, there were 5 or 6 rounds and when the finals callbacks were posted, I just looked at my partner in absolute shock. There were only 6 couples in the final round, which meant that all 6 were going to "place." After the final round of dancing, we looked at each other and said, "heck, if we get 6th place, that will be OKAY!" As it was, we got 5th place (which was a mild ego boost) and a candy bar for our efforts (it was, after all, a mock competition). Ahhhh. I'm quite pleased with the whole situation. I'm sorry if this entry is a little hairbrained, but I'm still trippin' out about the whole thing.

I guess I'll close with this:

Pronounced hip movements.

Amen to that.
